You will feel comfortable moving toward conflict knowing that it will lead to deeper understanding and eventually increased productivity. The basic strategy is to get everyone involved in the concept of interest based negotiation and then to create agreed-upon ground rules for resolution.

Here are some aspects of agreements which have been successful for other organizations:

  1. Conflicting parties make an appointment.
  2. Cool off before meeting.
  3. All prepare: strengths, issues, reasons and possible acts.
  4. Meet in neutral venue.
  5. Each states full elements of #3.
  6. Each listens actively (restating what’s been said).
  7. Normal room tones and volume.
  8. Moderate gestures.
  9. Brainstorm many solutions together.
  10. Create a win/win solution.
  11. Agree on acts, dates, times and check-ins.
  12. Act per agreement.
  13. Celebrate anything that went well.
  14. Share the success with others.
